the happy couples
to your engagement shoot
This is your guide to planning your engagement session from us here at Tailored Fit Photography. Nothing is absolutely mandatory – these are just our sugges- tions to getting the most out of your session. Please feel free to e-mail with any questions or concerns :)
We’re looking forward to your session – its going to be fun!
We’ll be shooting in natural light so we aim for the best quality light during the day – starting at about 2 hours before sunset.

Because we live in such a beautiful area – we love to shoot in natural settings! Open fields, overlooking the lake, on the beach or in a blossoming apple orchard – we’re up for anything! We also encourage choosing locations that are significant to the two of you. The spot where he proposed, the place you met, a hobby you enjoy together. The engagement pictures are about capturing who you are at this special time in your lives. Choosing something unique to the two of you will make your images more personal and meaningful.
You can bring 2 outfits each for your session (you don’t have to bring two if you don’t want to.) Many couples like to bring a more formal outfit as well as a more casual ensemble for contrast. Try to stick with outfits that are going be timeless, beautiful and classic – you want to admire and display these photos for years to come, so aim for looks that have stood the test of time, instead of current fads that might be out by next year. Its also best to aim a little more dressy for the guys.
Because we’ll be shooting in natural light, its best to stick to neutral shades, earth tones and light, airy colours. Blush, gold, yellow, pastels etc. Minimize dark colours like black or navy which don’t reflect light and on camera don’t look as great. Choose clothing attire that looks great and that you feel comfortable in. Clothing movement is also a huge factor in creating romance and drama in your photos – which is something a dress lends itself better to than pants. If you’re debating between outfits, just bring your extra choices with you!
Choose colours, patterns and styles that compliment each other but aren’t too matchy-matchy. Using different colours, layers and textures is great. Finally, cater your outfit to compliment your location. High heels and a cocktail dress are perfect for an urban environment, but if you’re shooting in a more outdoor location, a simple sundress will compliment your surroundings better.
If you’re looking for inspiration, Pinterest is a fantastic tool to look at what other couples are wearing, and why some outfits work better than others :)
makeup & hair
We definitely encourage professional makeup and hairstyling for your engagement session. Many brides will use the session as a chance to have a trial run of their Wed- ding Day hair and makeup. This is a fantastic way to see how it looks on camera and make any changes you need before the wedding day. Professional hair and make up artists will enhance your best features helping you to feel beautiful and confident in front of the camera.
Bring extra bobby pins and makeup as necessary to touch up during your shoot. Of- ten couples will bring an extra bag with them to carry outfit changes, hair accessories, shoes and props.
Feel free to add in personal touches that are meaningful to you. Examples could be your favourite sports jersey or hat, a sign with your wedding date and things that you love to do together. I find the most meaningful engagement sessions highlight your uniqueness as a couple and are personalized to you! Check out Pinterest for some unique ideas couples have incorporated into their engagement shoots!
An extra pair of shoes for walking is a definite help. Bring along a sweater in case it gets cold, and if the weather is hot, don’t forget to bring water :)
Its not a really a photo shoot – it’s an excuse to spend the afternoon with your fiancé celebrating your future together. You can even make a day of it, going out to dinner or a movie afterwards. Come ready to be affectionate, laugh, and have a great time.
We hope this guide has been helpful in planning your engagement session. Remember that nothing is absolutely mandatory – these are just our suggestions to getting the most out of your engagement shoot. Please feel free contact us with any engagement session questions or inquiries!
We’re looking forward to your session – its going to be fun!
